Barron ligation

Barron ligation is currently one of the most commonly used methods for the treatment of haemorrhoids. It involves the application of small rubber bands that cut off the blood supply to the haemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and eventually fall off.

This is a simple outpatient procedure that requires no special preparation or hospitalisation. It is a highly effective treatment that can relieve even long-standing and persistent haemorrhoidal symptoms.

How the procedure is performed

Barron ligation is suitable for a wide range of patients with haemorrhoids at different stages of the condition.

During the procedure, the patient is positioned either kneeling or lying on their side. A tubular anoscope coated with a lubricating gel, which may also contain a local anaesthetic, is gently inserted into the anal canal. Through the anoscope, the physician introduces a ligator, which draws the haemorrhoidal tissue into the device and places a small elastic band around its base.

The band is applied above the area containing pain-sensitive nerve endings, making the procedure only minimally uncomfortable. During a single visit, one to three haemorrhoids can usually be treated. If additional haemorrhoids require treatment, the procedure is scheduled over several appointments.
