Cystoscopy is a diagnostic method used in urology to examine the lining of the bladder and urethra. Many men have concerns and misconceptions about cystoscopy — particularly around discomfort — and most of these stem from an era before flexible cystoscopes became widely available.

At URO MEDICO, we use only the most advanced and slimmest flexible cystoscopes, combined with numbing gels and, where needed, inhaled analgosedation.

Cystoscopy is not a routine part of a urology examination. We perform it only when we need to examine the walls of the urinary tract in response to specific concerns the client has come to us with.

When do we use cystoscopy?

The most common reasons for performing a cystoscopy are blood in the urine, unexplained difficulties with urination or bladder control (including a strong urge to urinate), or recurrent urinary tract infections. Cystoscopy can also complement an ultrasound examination of the urinary tract when the ultrasound shows thickening of the lining in a particular area. Flexible cystoscopy makes it possible to identify pathological changes in the lining of the urinary tract. A biopsy can also be performed during the procedure, with a tissue sample taken for further analysis to rule out or confirm the presence of a tumour.

What does the procedure involve?

The flexible cystoscope we use consists of a thin, flexible tube just 3 mm in diameter, a light source and an optical system. Before insertion, we apply a numbing gel to both the cystoscope and the urethral opening. The optical sensors in the cystoscope capture images of the urinary tract walls, which the doctor views on a screen. The doctor adjusts the position of the instrument as needed, examining the bladder walls, ureteral openings and urethra in turn. A flexible cystoscopy typically takes around 5 to 10 minutes and is painless. If you are anxious about the examination or find medical procedures stressful in general, we can carry it out with inhaled analgosedation to help you feel more at ease.
