Frenuloplasty

Before the procedure, you will attend a pre-operative consultation. During this appointment, your doctor will take a medical history, including any medication allergies and any drugs you take that affect blood clotting. Blood and urine samples are also taken for laboratory analysis. A physical examination will determine whether there is also a narrowing of the foreskin alongside the short frenulum. If so, it is usually appropriate to combine the frenuloplasty with a circumcision. 

The procedure itself is performed on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, numbing the penis with an injection into the inguinal canals. The short frenulum is divided with a transverse incision and then closed lengthwise with dissolvable sutures, which effectively lengthens it. The procedure is quick, typically taking around 15 minutes, and you are free to go home straight afterwards.

Some mild swelling of the penis is normal after the procedure and usually settles within 3 days. During this time the penis will be quite sensitive, and we recommend applying an antibacterial ointment or cream as advised by your doctor. You can also bathe the area gently with a warm chamomile solution. Loose, comfortable underwear is strongly advised.

Sexual abstinence for two to three weeks is necessary during recovery. Until the wound has healed fully, it is also advisable to gently retract the foreskin towards the base of the penis each day to prevent scar tissue from forming and the frenulum from shortening again.
