What is phimosis?
Phimosis is a condition in which the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans of the penis because it is too tight. It is a relatively common condition in boys and men.
How is phimosis treated?
Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and the patient's age. There are two main treatment options: conservative (non-surgical) treatment and surgical treatment. The most appropriate approach depends on the individual case and your doctor's assessment.
Conservative treatment (mainly used in children)
- Foreskin stretching: This method involves gently and gradually stretching the foreskin to loosen it over time. Regular stretching exercises, during which the foreskin is slowly pulled back from the glans, may help improve flexibility. These exercises should always be performed carefully to avoid pain or injury.
- Creams and ointments: In some cases, your doctor may recommend applying a topical cream or ointment to the foreskin. This can help reduce inflammation and make stretching the foreskin easier.
- Observation: In children and adolescents, phimosis is often a temporary condition that may resolve naturally as they grow. If it is not causing any symptoms or complications, your doctor may recommend regular monitoring and allowing time for normal development.
Surgical treatment
- Circumcision: Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which part or all of the foreskin is removed. It provides a permanent solution for phimosis and may be recommended if conservative treatment has not been successful or if phimosis causes significant problems, such as recurrent infections, pain, or difficulty urinating. Circumcision is a common outpatient procedure.
- Deglutination: Deglutination is mainly performed in children when the foreskin is attached to the glans by adhesions (known as preputial adhesions), rather than narrowed. During the procedure, the adhesions are gently separated using a fine probe while the foreskin is carefully retracted towards the base of the penis.
