Information

Testicular prosthesis implantation is a surgical procedure in which an artificial testicular implant, most commonly made of silicone or another biocompatible material, is placed in the scrotum.

It is most often performed after removal of a testicle (orchiectomy) for oncological, developmental or traumatic reasons and is primarily intended to restore the natural appearance of the scrotum.

The procedure does not affect hormonal or reproductive function.

How the implantation is performed

Testicular prosthesis implantation takes approximately 30 minutes. The urologist makes a small incision in the scrotal area and creates a pocket within the scrotal tissue. A silicone or other biocompatible implant, sized to match the other testicle if present, is then placed inside. The implant is secured with a suture to prevent it from shifting. Once the prosthesis is in place, the incision is carefully closed with absorbable sutures and covered with a sterile dressing.

The procedure is considered relatively straightforward and is performed under sedation (analgosedation).

Recovery after implantation

You may experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort in the scrotal area. This can usually be managed with common painkillers. Swelling and bruising are normal after the procedure and usually subside within 1–2 weeks. We recommend showering after the procedure rather than taking baths or swimming, due to the risk of infection. Wearing supportive underwear or a scrotal support is also recommended to help reduce swelling and discomfort.

You should avoid strenuous physical activity, sports, cycling and sexual intercourse for 4–6 weeks. During this time, the implant settles into place and your body gradually adjusts to it. However, many patients are able to return to their normal daily activities within 7–10 days, depending on how they feel.
