What is testosterone?
Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, produced mainly in the testes and, in smaller amounts, in the female ovaries and adrenal glands. It is a steroid hormone belonging to a group known as androgens, and plays a key role in many physical and reproductive functions in both men and women.
The main functions of testosterone:
- Development of male sexual characteristics. Testosterone is responsible for the development of the male reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics, including voice changes, facial hair growth, increased muscle mass and a deeper voice.
- Spermatogenesis. Testosterone plays a central role in the development and production of sperm, which is essential for reproduction.
- Regulation of muscle mass and strength. Testosterone helps maintain muscle mass and strength, and is also involved in regulating body fat.
- Influence on mood and behaviour. Testosterone can affect mood, energy levels, self-confidence and sexual drive.
- Bone health. Testosterone contributes to maintaining bone health and bone density.
In women, testosterone plays an important role in regulating the reproductive cycle and has an influence on sexual drive and muscle mass. In both sexes, testosterone levels change over the course of a lifetime and can be affected by a range of factors, including genetics, age, lifestyle and overall health.
