Symptoms of haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids can be either internal or external. Internal haemorrhoids are more common and are located inside the anal canal. External haemorrhoids develop when tissue protrudes outside through the anus.

In the early stages, haemorrhoids may be symptom-free. Over time, most people with haemorrhoids experience one or more symptoms, such as bleeding during or after bowel movements, itching and burning after passing stool, a palpable swelling in the anal canal, or a dull pain in the affected area.

Do not delay visiting a proctologist if you experience the first signs of discomfort. Early detection always means easier treatment. In addition, without an examination it is not possible to determine whether it is “just” haemorrhoids or a more serious condition.

Treatment of haemorrhoids

Treatment depends on the stage of haemorrhoid development.

First-degree haemorrhoids can usually be treated conservatively with ointments, suppositories, and sitz baths. Adjusting lifestyle and diet is also recommended to prevent overly hard stools and excessive pressure in the haemorrhoidal area during bowel movements.
